Journaling is Stoicism. It’s almost impossible to have one without the other. Ryan Holiday’s journaling ideas come from his 15+ year practice of writing and reflecting on Stoicism. Journaling is one of the most essential exercises in Stoic philosophy. Epictetus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius all praised the benefits of journaling. In Stoicism the daily practice is the philosophy.

    1. Just start. I’ve done this a dozen times. Never written a word. What one sentence? What the hell do you write?

I remember Journaling when I was in my teens. It was mostly teenage angst and my family read some parts of it. I burnt all my work down. I’m slowly understanding that I don’t always have to make it about other people. I am now slightly more mature and will once again being writing in a physical diary with much clarity and focus on myself.

I write a short paragraph every day in my five year diary (I am on the second year). So I decided to also write a daily emotional journal, but for some reason I just can’t keep it up. It’s not like I have to write something emotional every day, I can just write observations, or elaborate on my day, but it’s just not working out and I am stressing about getting behind. So I guess I am just going to have to drop it.

Just an FYI..Nelson Mandela calendar and journals are available at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, he NEVER used a computer or electronic device for his journals…There were literally rows and rows of calendars and journals…All hand written entries of course…100% solid content! Thank you!

journaling isn’t for everybody, especially daily journaling. I usually fall asleep at about 830pm and go back to sleep and wake up at 4am. I really can’t remember what happened the previous 24 hrs and why should you journal if you try to follow a planner anyway?

obsidian is future proof , saving your file as markdown .

but I guess the feeling of hand writing to express your feeling in the moment . could be one of the most satisfying feelings.
recording your feeling in audio, is one example to reflect the feeling you had in that specific moment is another choice.

Couldn’t agree more! Journaling inspired by Stoic principles can be incredibly transformative. Studies show that reflective journaling can improve emotional resilience and clarity by up to 30%. The challenge is integrating these habits consistently into daily life. I faced this myself, but after trying various methods, a friend recommended Habit10x. Their approach to building and maintaining effective journaling habits, combined with Stoic wisdom, really helped me enhance my personal growth. Found them through Google!

Watching these videos to get me back to my life, inspires me, and reminds me that Life is great! If it is super hard, I watch it or other videos repetitively about 5 times, until I feel calm inside. Thank you for doing your job.

I’ve been journaling a few months now and for the life of me I don’t understand how people see these as functional tools beyond the introspection aspect.
Unless you have some complex Dewey decimal card catalog it’s not like you’ll ever be able to access the information in an any meaningful or efficient way again.

Thanks for this video. I heard you say something about journaling in a previous video and I really want to start recording my thoughts, feelings, and things I’ve done to have record and for self improvement. I know I can’t remember everything so I hope journaling can give me peace of mind and a foundation to build upon.

Why do people always refer to these methods as ‘secrets’? They are not secrets. The methods and practices are not hidden, or known only to those these ‘wise men’. If it’s on YouTube it’s not a ‘secret’.
Some people call it ‘keeping a diary’ . The end.

Instinctively I started journaling, not a dairy but at 16. I would write about the marvelous of my unknown life ahead of me.
I also had a master wish list and everything on my list had happened. It works.
